There are some resorts that you enjoy once, and then there are the ones that keep calling you back. Pine Cliffs Resort, part of Marriott’s Luxury Collection, falls firmly into the second category.
We’ve now stayed at Pine Cliffs twice, during two completely different seasons and two very different chapters of our lives. Our first visit was over Christmas 2023. I was seven months pregnant with our son, our daughter had just turned two, and we were squeezing in one last family holiday before becoming a family of four. Our second visit couldn’t have been more different. We returned in August 2025 with a one-year-old and a three-year-old, this time joined by close friends visiting from San Diego.
Experiencing the resort during both the quiet holiday season and the height of summer gave us a unique perspective. While Christmas felt peaceful and relaxed, August transformed Pine Cliffs into a lively resort buzzing with families enjoying school holidays. Despite the completely different atmosphere, what impressed me most was how well the resort adapted to both experiences.
Whether you’re looking for a quiet winter escape or a beach vacation packed with activities for young children, Pine Cliffs somehow manages to deliver both without compromising on luxury.
If you’re considering a family vacation to Portugal’s Algarve, here’s everything you need to know after spending two very different stays at one of the region’s most iconic resorts.

Where is Pine Cliffs Resort? Getting There from Faro
Pine Cliffs Resort is located just outside Albufeira on Portugal’s beautiful Algarve coast, about 40 minutes from Faro Airport. For families traveling from elsewhere in Europe, it’s an incredibly easy destination to reach. Direct flights from many major European cities mean you can often arrive before lunchtime and be relaxing by the pool that afternoon. Given Faro’s growing popularity, I’ve heard there are several direct flights from the U.S – especially during peak travel season so it’s worth your research.
Both times we visited, we flew into Faro and rented a car. Although Pine Cliffs is very much a destination resort where you could easily spend an entire week without leaving the property, we enjoyed having the flexibility to explore nearby towns, beaches, and restaurants at our own pace.
Driving around the Algarve is straightforward, and having a rental car made grocery runs, day trips, and sightseeing much easier—especially with two small children and all the gear that comes along with them (even though I try to pack light – check out my minimalist packing guide for traveling with small children!)
If you’re planning to venture beyond the resort, I’d definitely recommend renting a car. But if your goal is simply to relax by the beach, enjoy the restaurants, and let the kids spend their days at Porto Pirata, you could comfortably skip it and I don’t think you would regret it. There’s a decent sized grocery store immediately off the property that is easily reachable and there are mini-markets on the property itself.
Staying at Pine Cliffs: Ocean Suites vs. The Residences
One of the things I love most about Pine Cliffs is that there really isn’t a one-size-fits-all accommodation option. Depending on who you’re traveling with, there are several different choices, each offering a slightly different experience.
Our Christmas Vacation: The Ocean Suites
During our Christmas visit, we traveled with my in-laws and my sister-in-law, so we booked a two-bedroom in the Pine Cliffs Ocean Suites for my immediate family and my husband’s family booked a separate two-bedroom suite.
Given our daughter’s nap schedule and sometime early bedtimes, we frequently had everyone under one roof and we never felt cramped. The suite offered plenty of space for everyone to spread out, while still being close enough to the main hotel that we could easily walk to breakfast, restaurants, and the beach. This is a huge advantage for the Ocean Suites as they are located next to almost all major amenities within the complex.
Traveling while seven months pregnant also meant we appreciated not having to walk long distances several times a day. Everything we wanted was within easy reach, making the resort feel manageable even with a toddler in tow.
The suite itself felt exactly what we’ve come to expect from Marriott’s Luxury Collection properties—comfortable without feeling overly formal, spacious enough for families, and beautifully designed with plenty of natural light. We had our own laundry facilities, a full kitchen and two massive bathrooms. More than enough room for our family of three.

Summer: The Three-Bedroom Residence
When we returned last August, our trip looked completely different. Instead of traveling with extended family, we were vacationing with close friends from San Diego, and now there were two little ones to keep entertained. This time we chose one of the three-bedroom Pine Cliffs Residence that we were able to book using Marriott points.
Looking back, it ended up being one of the best decisions we made during the trip.
The Residences have their own quieter section of the resort that almost felt like a boutique resort within Pine Cliffs itself. While we still spent plenty of time exploring the main property, it was nice to have somewhere peaceful to retreat to after busy afternoons at the beach. It also felt very family oriented given may families choose the larger accommodations. Although not as modern as the Ocean Suites, it was still on par with Marriott’s Luxury Collection and included our own laundry, kitchen, etc.
As I hinted to above, one unexpected feature that quickly became invaluable was the small convenience store located just steps away from the Residences. They have popsicles, pool toys, toiletries and any of your required necessities (for me, wine!) It may not sound particularly exciting, but any parent knows exactly how important these little conveniences become (especially the wine.) Whether we needed extra snacks for the kids, sunscreen we’d forgotten to pack, or milk before bedtime, it was incredibly helpful not having to trek across the resort every time we realized we’d forgotten something. It’s one of those thoughtful details that you don’t necessarily notice when booking, but it made our stay noticeably easier.

So, which accommodation would I choose?
Honestly, I don’t think you can go wrong. If you’re traveling as a couple or with one child and want to be closer to the heart of the resort, the Ocean Suites are an excellent choice. For larger families, grandparents, or friends traveling together, I’d absolutely recommend the Residences. Having extra bedrooms, additional living space, and easy access to a very family-friendly pool made our August stay feel relaxed, even with two young children.
One thing I’ve consistently appreciated about Pine Cliffs is that it never feels like a typical hotel. No matter where you’re staying, it feels much more like settling into a beautiful coastal neighborhood than checking into a large resort.
Porto Pirata: One of Europe’s Largest Kids’ Clubs?
One thing you’ll quickly notice about Pine Cliffs is that it doesn’t treat children’s activities as an afterthought. Instead, they’re woven into the entire experience, and nowhere is that more obvious than Porto Pirata. Porto Pirata is easily one of the largest kids’ clubs we’ve come across during our travels. It’s much more than a room with a few toys—it’s practically its own little village designed entirely for children.
The first thing you’ll spot are the two enormous wooden pirate ships, complete with climbing structures and slides. From there you’ll find bouncy castles, dedicated pools, mini golf, playgrounds, sports courts, shaded play areas, and even quiet spaces for naps. Children are grouped by age, with separate spaces for younger and older kids, making it feel well thought out for families traveling with children at different stages.

Because our children were still quite young during both visits, we spent most of our time exploring Porto Pirata together rather than using the drop-off program extensively. It became one of those places we’d naturally wander over to every day, giving our daughter somewhere exciting to climb, explore, and burn off energy before lunch or dinner.
Another unexpected surprise during our Christmas visit was discovering the small arcade tucked away near the kids’ area. It wasn’t something we had planned to find, but it quickly became another fun stop during our walks around the resort.
If you’ve read any of my other resort reviews, you’ll know I’m always paying attention to Kids Clubs. They’re often what separates a beautiful hotel from one that actually works for families. Whether your children want structured activities or simply a place to run around after breakfast, there’s enough here to keep them entertained for days. A few things to note is that the children’s program is seasonal (but it was available for both of our stays) and I believe it allows care (not complimentary – at a nominal fee) for children between 12 months and 8 years. The age requirements are one item I didn’t document so I am basing this statement on memory but I recommend verifying before your trip. Even in the off-season, you have access to the massive outdoor playground so it’s still very useful.
What to do at Pine Cliffs? Golf, Giant Chess, and Unexpected Family Fun
Although we don’t typically plan our vacations around golf (don’t tell my husband that), my husband managed to squeeze in a round during both of our stays. The resort’s nine-hole course sits dramatically along the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, and even as someone who doesn’t play, it’s hard not to appreciate the scenery. The signature sixth hole—known as Devil’s Parlour—is probably the most photographed hole on the course. Players have to hit across a dramatic ravine to reach the green, and apparently it’s every bit as intimidating as it looks.

And then…there are the cats. If you’ve read my review of Domes of Corfu, you’ll already know my daughter has a habit of making friends with every resort cat she meets. Pine Cliffs was no exception.
The resort manages a population of sterilized cats, which are carefully monitored and provided with medical care in collaboration with the Associação Para Ativa and Albufeira City Council to ensure sanitary condition. Naturally, our daughter was completely fascinated. Every morning quickly became a scavenger hunt to see how many cats she could spot before breakfast. It’s such a small detail, but it’s one of those unexpected memories that children remember long after they’ve forgotten what the hotel room looked like.
Another feature both of our children absolutely loved was the oversized outdoor chess set. I’m certain no actual chess was played, but that didn’t matter in the slightest. They spent ages dragging the enormous pieces around the board, proudly moving them from square to square as if they invented their own version of the game. It’s little touches like this that I appreciate at family resorts. Not every activity needs to be scheduled or supervised. Sometimes children are happiest when they’re simply given interesting spaces to explore with a little imagination.
Finally, I recommend you check out the weekly itinerary at MIMO Algarve. You can schedule family cooking classes, a course to learn how to make speciality drinks, tour their adorable shop and so much more. It’s one of the shops I at least stopped into at least once a day.

Dining at Pine Cliffs: From Relaxed Family Meals to Date Night
One thing that surprised us between our two visits was just how different the dining experience felt depending on the season.
At Christmas, several of the resort’s seasonal restaurants were closed, so we naturally found ourselves returning to a handful of favorites. We enjoyed a lovely Christmas Eve dinner at O Pescador, which felt much quieter and more intimate than I expected during the holidays. On Christmas Day, we had lunch offsite at Parrilla Natural, which also has an awesome playground to keep children occupied while you enjoy a fantastic meal.

Returning in August was a completely different experience. With the resort fully open for the summer season, every restaurant was buzzing, and we loved having so many options without ever leaving the property. If I had to recommend just one restaurant for an adult date night, it would be Yakuza by Olivier. Tucked away in a peaceful garden setting, Yakuza somehow manages to feel completely removed from the rest of the resort. The food was exceptional—easily one of the best Japanese meals we’ve had at any luxury resort—and the atmosphere made it feel like a true date-night destination. Whether you’re celebrating something special or simply looking for an excuse to enjoy an evening away from the traditional restaurants, I would absolutely make a reservation here.
Of course, that’s only scratching the surface. Throughout the resort you’ll also find Italian at Portofino by MIMO, steaks at Piri Piri, healthy lunches at Zest, casual bites at Corda Café, and generous breakfast spreads at Jardim Colonial. One thing I’ve always appreciated is that despite the size of Pine Cliffs, dining never felt repetitive. There was enough variety that we looked forward to trying somewhere new each evening.
Sunset Drinks at Mirador Champagne Bar
Every resort seems to have one place where everyone naturally gathers just before sunset. At Pine Cliffs, that’s Mirador Champagne Bar. Perched right on the cliffs overlooking Praia da Falésia, it’s one of those spots that almost doesn’t need an introduction. The views speak for themselves.
One detail I loved was that the resort actually posts the exact sunset time each day near the entrance, making it surprisingly easy to plan your evening around golden hour. On our August trip, it quickly became a little ritual. After a busy afternoon at the pool, we’d make our way up to Mirador, order a drink, and watch the sun slowly disappear over the Atlantic while the kids happily explored in the gardens nearby.

Beyond Pine Cliffs: Exploring the Algarve
While it would be incredibly easy to spend an entire week without leaving the resort, the Algarve has so much to offer if you’re interested in exploring. One of the region’s most famous attractions is Benagil Cave, a spectacular sea cave that’s become one of Portugal’s most photographed landmarks. Visiting by boat is one of the most popular excursions in the Algarve, and if it’s your first time in the region, it’s definitely worth considering.
Families with slightly older children might also enjoy spending a day at Zoomarine, a combination marine park and water park located just outside Albufeira. If you’re looking for something a little slower paced, Albufeira’s Old Town makes a lovely afternoon outing. Its narrow cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and waterfront restaurants offer a completely different atmosphere from the resort. We also enjoyed exploring Vilamoura Marina, where luxury yachts line the harbor alongside cafés, restaurants, and boutiques. It’s a nice change of scenery if you’re looking to stretch your legs after a few days by the pool.
That said, I don’t think you should feel pressured to fill every day with excursions. Some of our favorite vacation memories are simply slow mornings on the balcony, afternoons by the pool, and watching the sunset from Mirador while the kids happily played nearby.
Cherished Memories: Is Pine Cliffs Worth it?
One of the things I love most about travel is how certain places become intertwined with different chapters of your life.
For us, Pine Cliffs will always remind me of two very different seasons of motherhood. Our first visit was filled with anticipation. I was pregnant with our son, our daughter was still our only child, and we were soaking up one last holiday as a family of three. When we returned, everything had changed. Suddenly there were two little ones to keep entertained, friends joining us from across the Atlantic, twice as many snacks to pack, and somehow even more joy.
What surprised me most wasn’t how much our family had changed—it was how effortlessly Pine Cliffs adapted to both trips. It worked just as well for a peaceful babymoon with a toddler as it did for the chaos (and fun!) of traveling with two young children in peak summer.
Luxury family resorts are becoming easier to find, but resorts that genuinely cater to both parents and children without making either feel like an afterthought are still surprisingly uncommon. Pine Cliffs manages to do exactly that. Between Porto Pirata, beautiful accommodations, excellent dining, breathtaking clifftop views, and thoughtful touches that make traveling with young children easier, it’s become one of those places we’ll happily return to again.
And if our two visits are any indication, I have a feeling it won’t be our last.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Pine Cliffs Resort good for families with young children?
Absolutely. Between Porto Pirata, multiple swimming pools, spacious accommodations, family-friendly restaurants, and easy beach access, Pine Cliffs is one of the best luxury family resorts we’ve visited in Europe. Whether you’re traveling with toddlers or older children, there’s enough to keep everyone entertained.
Is Pine Cliffs worth visiting at Christmas?
We loved visiting over Christmas. The resort had a peaceful atmosphere that felt completely different from our August stay. While some seasonal restaurants were closed, we enjoyed the quieter pace, festive decorations, and more relaxed experience. If your priority is warm beach weather and the full restaurant lineup, I’d choose summer. If you’re looking for a quieter luxury escape during the holidays, Christmas is a wonderful time to visit.
Do you need a rental car?
Not necessarily. If your plan is to spend most of your vacation enjoying the resort, you could easily arrange airport transfers instead. However, if you’d like to visit Benagil Cave, Albufeira, Vilamoura, or explore more of the Algarve, I’d definitely recommend renting a car.
Which accommodation is best for families?
After staying in both, I’d recommend choosing based on your travel style. The Ocean Suites are ideal if you’d like to stay close to the main hotel and restaurants. The Residences are perfect for larger families, grandparents, or anyone who appreciates extra living space and a quieter atmosphere.
Is Porto Pirata worth it?
Without question. Even if you don’t use the supervised childcare, it’s an incredible place for children to explore.
